First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study looked at whether giving probiotics (good bacteria) to premature babies could help them digest food better and lower their risk of a serious gut infection called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). One hundred premature infants with low birth weight took part. Half received probiotics for their first month of life, while the other half got no treatment. The researchers tracked cases of NEC, death, and other complications to see if probiotics made a difference.
