Could probiotics help restore bowel control after stoma surgery?
NCT ID NCT07369830
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether placing live probiotic tablets into the unused part of the gut during a temporary ileostomy can improve bowel function after the stoma is reversed. 156 adults with ultra-low rectal cancer who had sphincter-saving surgery will be randomly assigned to a low dose, high dose, or no probiotic. The main goal is to see if probiotics reduce symptoms like urgency, incontinence, and frequent bowel movements one month after reversal.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Clostridium butyricum (live) probiotic tablets
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve bowel control and quality of life after stoma reversal surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The probiotic may not improve bowel function, and some people may experience bloating or discomfort.
