New hope for Drug-Resistant TB: shorter, safer treatment on the horizon?

NCT ID NCT06441006

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a shorter treatment regimen (13-24 weeks) using a combination of drugs (bedaquiline, linezolid, pretomanid, and moxifloxacin) works as well as the standard longer treatment for people with a type of drug-resistant tuberculosis. About 400 adults with fluoroquinolone-susceptible multidrug-resistant TB will be randomly assigned to different treatment lengths. The goal is to find a regimen that cures patients with fewer side effects and less time on medication.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bedaquiline, linezolid, pretomanid, moxifloxacin
What this could lead to
If successful, this trial could lead to shorter, more effective treatment regimens for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, reducing side effects and improving cure rates.
What could go wrong
This is an early-to-mid-stage trial with only 400 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. There are risks of serious side effects from the drugs, and the shorter treatment may not work as well as standard care.
