Simple mouth exercises may help preterm babies feed sooner
NCT ID NCT07306793
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a 5-minute daily mouth exercise routine (PIOMI) combined with feeding at specific times of day helps preterm infants (29-33 weeks old) transition to full oral feeding and gain weight. 54 babies will be monitored for 14 days. The goal is to improve feeding readiness and body weight without medication.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oral motor intervention (PIOMI) and chronobiological feeding schedule
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple, drug-free way to help preterm babies learn to feed by mouth sooner and gain weight faster.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 54 infants, so results may not apply to all preterm babies. The intervention is behavioral, so benefits may be modest.
