New model aims to crack the code on antibiotic-resistant sepsis in the ER

NCT ID NCT07167173

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to infection, and choosing the right antibiotic quickly is critical. This study will analyze data from 10,000 adults treated for sepsis in an emergency department to build a predictive model that estimates the likelihood of multidrug-resistant bacteria. The goal is to help doctors make better antibiotic choices, improving outcomes and reducing the spread of resistance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a tool that helps doctors choose the right antibiotics faster for sepsis patients, potentially improving survival and slowing antibiotic resistance.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The model may not work well in other hospitals or regions, and it won't directly help patients until it's tested in real-time use.
