Heart surgery pain map may predict chronic pain risk

NCT ID NCT06681272

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether measuring the area of skin sensitivity around a heart surgery scar can predict if a patient will have chronic pain 3 months later. Researchers used a pain mapping technique on 84 patients two days after surgery. The goal is to find a way to identify high-risk patients early so they can get better pain management.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple test to identify patients at high risk of long-term pain after heart surgery, allowing for early treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study. The results may not apply to all heart surgery patients, and the pain mapping method may not be accurate enough for routine use.
