New rule could help emergency dispatchers spot hidden brain bleeds in elderly fall victims
NCT ID NCT06784284
First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study aims to create a simple rule that emergency call handlers can use to predict whether an older adult (65+) who has fallen and hit their head is at risk of a brain bleed. Researchers will collect information from 1,100 calls to the SAMU emergency center in Toulouse, France, and follow up with patients who were not sent to the hospital. The goal is to identify which patients need immediate brain imaging and which can be safely monitored at home.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give emergency dispatchers a simple tool to decide which elderly fall victims need immediate brain scans, potentially saving lives and reducing unnecessary hospital visits.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The prediction rule may not be accurate enough to use in practice, and results may not apply to all elderly patients or settings.
