New hope for chemo-resistant breast cancer: targeted radiation before surgery

NCT ID NCT06596018

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is for people with breast cancer whose tumors did not shrink after two rounds of standard chemotherapy. It tests whether adding a short course of targeted radiation (SBRT) to continued chemotherapy can help eliminate more cancer before surgery. About 96 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy plus radiation. The goal is to see if the combination leads to higher rates of complete tumor disappearance and allows more women to have breast-conserving surgery instead of mastectomy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) plus chemotherapy (anthracycline and/or taxane based regimens)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a new treatment option for breast cancer patients whose tumors don't shrink with standard chemotherapy, potentially increasing the chance of complete tumor removal and breast conservation.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 96 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Adding radiation to chemotherapy could increase side effects, and the long-term benefits are still uncertain.
