Can a simple antiseptic rinse improve sinus surgery recovery?
NCT ID NCT07470242
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether rinsing the nose with diluted povidone-iodine (a common antiseptic) after sinus surgery helps people with chronic sinusitis recover better than standard saline or mucomyst rinses. Forty-eight adults who had sinus surgery used one of the three rinses daily for three months. Researchers checked healing with a scope and tested hearing to see if the rinse caused any ear damage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
povidone-iodine nasal irrigation
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost option for improving sinus healing after surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is also a risk of hearing damage (ototoxicity) with povidone-iodine.
