Handheld ultrasound could bring lifesaving scans to war zones

NCT ID NCT07677553

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether a short, hands-on training course can help community doctors in conflict-affected Syria use portable ultrasound devices to diagnose patients. Nine physicians from five village clinics attended a two-day course focused on heart, lung, and trauma scans. After training, each clinic received a handheld ultrasound machine, and doctors uploaded their scans for remote expert review. The goal is to see if this approach is practical and improves confidence and care in areas where standard imaging is unavailable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training and handheld ultrasound device

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help bring basic diagnostic imaging to remote and war-torn areas, improving care for people who otherwise have no access.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 9 doctors, so results may not apply broadly. The conflict setting also makes it hard to ensure consistent follow-up and device maintenance.
