Cancer gene hunt: could tumor maps guide better GI cancer treatment?
NCT ID NCT05489250
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looked at genetic mutations in tumors from 565 people with advanced gastrointestinal cancers, including liver, bile duct, gallbladder, pancreas, esophagus, and stomach cancers. The goal was to see how often these mutations could be targeted by existing drugs and to track whether using genetic information changed treatment decisions. The study was terminated early, so the full impact is unclear.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose more targeted treatments for gastrointestinal cancers based on a patient's tumor genetics.
What could go wrong
The study was terminated early, so results may be limited. It was observational, not testing a new treatment directly, so benefits are uncertain.
