New plasma injection may ease spinal headaches

NCT ID NCT06790745

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested two treatments for headaches that can happen after a spinal tap. One treatment uses a person's own blood (epidural blood patch), and the other uses a special substance made from their blood (plasma-rich fibrin). The goal was to see which works better to relieve the headache. Sixty adults with this type of headache took part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Plasma-rich fibrin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for post-dural puncture headache, potentially with fewer side effects than the standard blood patch.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and the new treatment might not be more effective than the existing one.
