Simple blood test may spot Alzheimer's early

NCT ID NCT01315639

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether measuring certain proteins in the blood (amyloid peptides) can help diagnose Alzheimer's disease or predict its progression. Over 1,000 older adults with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's were followed for two years. Researchers compared blood levels of these proteins between those whose condition worsened and those who remained stable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to help diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier or predict how fast it will progress.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The blood test may not be accurate enough for routine use, and results may not apply to all populations.
