Asthma relief in a chew? plant stanols put to the test
NCT ID NCT03983603
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether eating a soft chew containing plant stanols every day can reduce asthma symptoms in people with allergic asthma. Plant stanols are known to lower cholesterol, but they may also shift the immune system away from the type of response that triggers asthma attacks. The trial will enroll 160 adults with stable allergic asthma and compare the stanol chew to a placebo over time, measuring symptom control and other health markers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
plant stanols (as plant stanol esters) in soft chews
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help manage asthma symptoms and reduce reliance on medication.
What could go wrong
This is an early exploratory trial, so results may not show clear benefit. The effect on asthma is theoretical, and the supplement may not improve symptoms in real-world settings.
