First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a diet rich in plant-based foods is feasible and safe for people with stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Singapore. Forty adults will either follow a plant-based diet or a standard kidney-friendly diet, with regular dietitian support. The main goal is to see if people can stick to the diet and find it acceptable, while also checking for risks like high potassium and potential benefits like slower disease progression.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

predominantly plant-based diet

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a plant-based diet is a practical way to help manage chronic kidney disease and slow its progression in Asian populations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply broadly. There is also a risk of high potassium levels (hyperkalaemia) or nutritional deficiencies.
