One procedure to replace lifelong blood thinners? new trial tests dual heart fix for stroke survivors
NCT ID NCT06212674
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a single procedure that combines two heart treatments—pulmonary vein isolation (to correct irregular heartbeat) and left atrial appendage occlusion (to block a clot-prone area)—can prevent future strokes and major bleeding better than standard blood thinners. The trial enrolls 240 adults who recently had a stroke and have atrial fibrillation. Participants are randomly assigned to the combined procedure, the occlusion procedure alone, or continued medication. The goal is to see if the combined approach is at least as effective as medication, with fewer bleeding risks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Procedure: pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) plus left atrial appendage occluder (LAAO) implantation
What this could lead to
If successful, this combined procedure could offer a one-time treatment to reduce stroke risk and bleeding complications compared to lifelong blood thinners.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial with 240 participants, so results are preliminary. The procedure carries risks like bleeding, infection, or device complications, and may not be superior to standard medication.
