Gene test could prevent medication mishaps in hospitals
NCT ID NCT06907784
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a quick genetic test from a cheek swab can help doctors choose safer, more effective medicines for hospital patients. About 2000 adults starting a new drug will be randomly assigned to get the test results immediately or after three months. The goal is to see if immediate testing reduces side-effects and treatment failures, and saves the NHS money.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Pharmacogenomic testing (cheek swab genetic test)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that routine genetic testing before prescribing helps choose safer, more effective medicines, potentially reducing side-effects and hospital readmissions.
- What could go wrong
- This is a pilot study with 2000 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The genetic test only covers 16 genes, and benefits may be small or not cost-effective.
