Gum fluid proteins may reveal hidden clues about periodontitis

NCT ID NCT06727929

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study measured two proteins, Dkk-1 and sFRP5, in the gum fluid of 99 people with healthy gums, gingivitis, or periodontitis. Researchers collected samples before and after non-surgical periodontal treatment (deep cleaning) to see if these proteins change with treatment. The goal was to explore whether these proteins could serve as markers for gum disease activity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

non-surgical periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new way to diagnose or monitor gum disease using protein levels in gum fluid.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study that only measured protein levels; it does not test a new treatment. The results may not apply to broader populations or lead to a diagnostic test.
