New combo aims to stop Triple-Negative breast cancer recurrence
NCT ID NCT05973864
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether adding pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) to capecitabine (chemotherapy) after standard treatment can prevent triple-negative breast cancer from coming back. It includes 220 adults who still have cancer after initial chemo-immunotherapy. Participants will receive the drugs for several months, plus radiation if needed. The main goal is to see if this approach improves how long people stay cancer-free.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and capecitabine (chemotherapy)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this combination could reduce the risk of breast cancer returning in patients who still have cancer after initial treatment.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase 2 trial, so it is still early. The added drugs may cause side effects like immune reactions or hand-foot syndrome, and may not improve survival.
