Two genes eyed as hidden drivers of diabetes risk in obesity
NCT ID NCT00422006
First seen Sep 14, 2026 · Last updated Sep 15, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers want to know whether two genes, PCSK9 and FXR, help cause the combination of insulin resistance and abnormal blood fats that often comes with obesity. The study enrolls 111 adults with a high body mass index who are scheduled for bariatric surgery. During surgery, doctors take small samples of liver, muscle, and fat tissue. The team then measures how active those genes are and looks for links to insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and gene variations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the genes PCSK9 and FXR turn out to drive insulin resistance and abnormal blood fats in obesity, this could point toward new drug targets for those conditions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study of 111 people, so it can show associations but not prove cause and effect. Any findings may not apply to people who are not obese or who have not had bariatric surgery.
