Can a bigger dose of tylenol before tonsillectomy cut opioid needs in kids?
NCT ID NCT07463482
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two doses of oral paracetamol (acetaminophen) given before tonsillectomy in children aged 3 to 15. Half the children get a standard dose (15 mg/kg) and half get a higher loading dose (30 mg/kg). The goal is to see if the higher dose reduces the need for rescue opioid pain medication in the first 12 hours after surgery. All children receive the same standard anesthesia and pain management.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Paracetamol (acetaminophen)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple way to reduce opioid use after pediatric tonsillectomy, lowering side effects and risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 54 children. The higher dose may not reduce opioid use significantly and could increase side effects like nausea.
