Could dropping aspirin after a heart attack be safer?
NCT ID NCT07257198
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking only the blood thinner ticagrelor (instead of the usual combination of ticagrelor plus aspirin) can reduce bleeding after a heart attack. It involves 2,570 adults who had a heart attack but did not receive stents or bypass surgery. Participants will take either ticagrelor plus a placebo or ticagrelor plus aspirin for 12 months, and researchers will compare bleeding events and major heart problems between the two groups.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ticagrelor (a blood thinner) plus a placebo, compared to ticagrelor plus aspirin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using only ticagrelor after a heart attack lowers bleeding risk while still preventing future heart problems, leading to a safer treatment option.
What could go wrong
This is a large Phase 3 trial, but it only includes patients who did not receive stents or bypass surgery, so results may not apply to everyone. There is still a risk that ticagrelor alone may not prevent heart attacks or strokes as well as the standard combination.
