Can digestive enzymes boost nutrition in seniors?

NCT ID NCT06826105

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a low dose of pancreatic enzymes (pancrelipase) taken with a nutritional supplement can help older adults at risk of malnutrition absorb nutrients better. Twenty hospitalized patients aged 70 or older will receive either the enzymes or a placebo alongside the supplement. The main goal is to measure changes in amino acid levels in the blood after eating.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Pancrelipase (Zenpep)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple way to improve nutrient absorption in older adults at risk of malnutrition.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention may not show meaningful benefit.
