Summary

This study tests a new quadrivalent Pan-Salmonella vaccine designed to protect against several types of Salmonella bacteria that cause typhoid and paratyphoid fevers. Healthy adults aged 18 to 45 in Africa receive either a low or full dose of the vaccine, with or without an adjuvant (alum), to see how safe it is and how well it triggers an immune response. The trial is the first step in humans for this vaccine and will monitor side effects and antibody levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pan-Salmonella vaccine (with or without alum)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a vaccine that protects against multiple Salmonella strains, reducing typhoid and paratyphoid fever in Africa.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 1 trial with only 196 participants, so safety and immune response are still being tested. The vaccine may not produce strong enough protection or could have side effects.
