Pillow or traction? small study tests better pain care for elderly hip fracture patients
NCT ID NCT03185663
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested two ways to manage pain in patients aged 70 and older who had a hip fracture and were waiting for surgery. One method used a continuous pulling technique on the skin, and the other used a pillow placed between the legs. The goal was to see which approach caused less pain during washing before surgery. Only 40 people took part, so the results are very early and not conclusive.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
traction-stuck (continuous pulling method) and a pillow between the legs
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify a better way to manage pain and prevent pressure ulcers in elderly patients waiting for hip fracture surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It does not test a new drug or cure.
