First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compared two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—PENG block and caudal block—for managing pain after hip surgery in 80 children aged 1 to 7. Both blocks use the numbing drug bupivacaine. The goal was to see which provides better pain relief and reduces the need for opioids, which can have serious side effects. Pain was measured using the FLACC scale.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If one block works better, it could improve pain control and reduce opioid side effects for children after hip surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with 80 children. Results may not apply to all surgeries or ages, and both blocks have rare risks like infection or drug allergy.
