New painkiller may cut opioid use after chest surgery

NCT ID NCT03737292

First seen Jun 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026

Summary

This study tests a long-acting painkiller (liposomal bupivacaine) against a standard one (plain bupivacaine) for pain after chest surgery. About 40 adults having minimally invasive chest surgery will receive one of the two drugs injected between the ribs. Researchers will measure drug levels in the blood and track pain, opioid use, and recovery for up to 3 months to see if the long-acting version provides better pain control with fewer side effects.
