Common surgery drug could be key to longer life for elderly cancer patients

NCT ID NCT03012971

Summary

This study tested whether adding a medication called dexmedetomidine to standard pain control after cancer surgery could help older patients live longer. Researchers enrolled 1,500 patients aged 65+ who had surgery to remove a solid tumor. They wanted to see if this drug, by reducing surgical stress, improving pain relief and sleep, and lowering confusion, might help the body's immune system fight cancer recurrence.
