New study aims to find best pain block for elderly back surgery patients
NCT ID NCT07607509
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will compare two types of nerve blocks—lumbar paravertebral block and lumbar erector spinae plane block—for pain control after lumbar spine surgery in people aged 65 and older. The goal is to see which block reduces the need for opioid painkillers in the first 48 hours after surgery. 120 participants will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two blocks along with standard anesthesia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ropivacaine (a numbing medicine)
- What this could lead to
- If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer opioid side effects for older adults after back surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial that hasn't started yet. The results may not apply to all patients, and both blocks carry rare risks like infection or bleeding.
