New study tests better pain relief for back surgery patients

NCT ID NCT07354581

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—Erector Spinae Plane Block and Quadro-Iliac Plane Block—for managing pain after lumbar spine surgery. Eighty adults aged 18 to 65 will receive one of the blocks at the end of surgery. The main goal is to see which block reduces the need for opioid painkillers in the first 48 hours after surgery, and how it affects recovery quality.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer opioids after back surgery, helping patients recover more comfortably.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with no phase, so results may not apply to everyone. Both blocks are safe but may not reduce pain significantly for all patients.
