Ozone-Flushed jaws: new procedure aims to ease TMJ pain

NCT ID NCT07666282

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether using ozonated water to flush the jaw joint (arthrocentesis) works better than the standard Ringer's solution for people with a displaced jaw disc that snaps back into place. Thirty adults with TMJ pain and limited mouth opening were treated. The main goal was to see if ozonated water reduces pain more effectively and improves jaw function.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ozonated water

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a more effective, minimally invasive procedure to reduce jaw pain and improve mouth opening for people with TMJ disorders.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure is still experimental and may not be widely available.
