New trial tests gentler surgery for ovarian cysts to save fertility

NCT ID NCT07666412

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two surgical techniques for ovarian endometrioma—standard cyst removal (cystectomy) versus a newer method using argon plasma coagulation (APC) to vaporize the cyst lining. The goal is to see which better preserves ovarian reserve, measured by antral follicle count and AMH levels, and reduces recurrence. 146 women aged 18-40 with symptomatic endometriomas will be followed for 12 months after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) ablation procedure
What this could lead to
If APC works better, it could offer a safer surgical option that preserves more healthy ovarian tissue and reduces the risk of infertility after endometrioma surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early randomized trial with no prior direct comparison, so results may not confirm superiority. There is also a risk of cyst recurrence with APC due to leftover endometriotic tissue.
