New chemo combo may let more rectal cancer patients skip surgery
NCT ID NCT02514278
First seen May 15, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding two months of chemotherapy (Folfirinox) before the usual radiation and chemo could help more people with early-stage rectal cancer keep their rectum instead of needing surgery. 218 adults with small, low-lying tumors took part. The goal was to see if the extra treatment increased the number of people who could avoid surgery and a colostomy bag one year later.
