Water vs. IV: emergency room study tests simpler way to protect kidneys

NCT ID NCT07459413

First seen Mar 15, 2026 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study compares drinking water to receiving intravenous (IV) fluids for preventing kidney injury caused by contrast dye used in CT scans. About 198 emergency department patients with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease will be randomly assigned to either drink water or get IV fluids before and after their scan. The goal is to see if the simpler, cheaper option works just as well at protecting the kidneys.
