Water vs. IV: could a simple drink prevent kidney damage from CT dye?
NCT ID NCT07459413
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares drinking water to receiving IV fluids for preventing kidney injury caused by contrast dye used in CT scans. Researchers will enroll 198 emergency department patients with mild-to-moderate kidney disease. Participants will either drink water or get IV fluids before and after their scan, and their kidney function will be checked 48-72 hours later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Water (oral hydration)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simply drinking water is as effective as IV fluids for protecting kidneys during CT scans, simplifying care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (198 participants) and only tests a non-inferiority hypothesis. Results may not apply to all patients or settings.
