Sugar water may ease pancreatitis recovery better than clear liquids
NCT ID NCT07375186
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares an oral carbohydrate solution (a sugar drink) to a standard clear liquid diet as the first food given to people with mild to moderate acute pancreatitis. The goal is to see which approach causes fewer problems like pain or nausea and leads to a shorter hospital stay. About 276 adults in Pakistan will take part, and if the sugar drink works well, it could offer a cheap and simple option for early nutrition.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Oral carbohydrate solution (10% dextrose in water)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, cost-effective alternative to clear liquid diets for early feeding in acute pancreatitis, potentially reducing pain and hospital stays.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial in one hospital, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is a dietary supplement, not a drug, so any benefit is likely modest.
