New heart catheter aims to zap Hard-to-Treat AFib

NCT ID NCT06960252

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new catheter called OPTRELL™ to map and treat persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), a type of irregular heartbeat that is harder to treat. The device helps doctors identify and target the specific areas in the heart causing the problem. The trial will enroll 80 people with persistent AF to see if this approach reduces the chance of the arrhythmia returning after ablation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

OPTRELL™ Mapping Catheter (a device used to map the heart's electrical signals during ablation)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could improve the precision of ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation, potentially reducing the chance of the arrhythmia coming back.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (80 participants) testing a new device. The approach may not work better than standard ablation, and there are always risks with heart procedures like bleeding or infection.
