Could some heart patients safely stop blood thinners after ablation?
NCT ID NCT07496281
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether people with atrial fibrillation who have had a successful heart ablation and also have a heart stent can safely stop taking blood thinners. Participants who maintain a normal heart rhythm for at least a year after ablation will either continue blood thinners or switch to a single antiplatelet drug. The goal is to see if stopping blood thinners is as safe and effective as continuing them.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC) and single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that some patients with atrial fibrillation and prior stents can safely stop blood thinners after successful ablation, reducing bleeding risk.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase trial with only 2 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Stopping blood thinners could increase the risk of stroke or heart attack.
