This study followed 761 adults who were sent home from the emergency room with a prescription for opioid painkillers for acute pain. Researchers called participants at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months to ask about pain relief, side effects, and any signs of addiction. The goal is to learn the smallest amount of opioids needed to control pain safely and to help create better prescribing guidelines.
