Could skipping opioids make endoscopy safer and more comfortable?

NCT ID NCT07649746

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will test whether using only dexmedetomidine (an opioid-free sedative) during endoscopy procedures like colonoscopy and ERCP can reduce common side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness compared to a standard opioid-based combination. Eighty adults scheduled for these procedures will be randomly assigned to one of two sedation groups. The goal is to see if avoiding opioids leads to a smoother recovery and higher satisfaction for both patients and staff.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Dexmedetomidine and remifentanil
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that opioid-free sedation is a safer, more comfortable option for routine endoscopy procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The opioid-free approach might not control pain as well as the combination.
