Can online therapy help first responders cope? new study seeks answers

NCT ID NCT04127032

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests an internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) program designed specifically for Canadian public safety personnel (like police, firefighters, and paramedics) who have symptoms of depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress. Participants choose their level of therapist support and complete the program over 8 to 16 weeks. Researchers will track how much people engage with the program and whether their symptoms and daily functioning improve.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) – a structured online program with optional therapist support

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a flexible, accessible mental health treatment option for first responders and other public safety personnel.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study without a control group, so results may not prove the therapy works better than no treatment. Participation requires internet access and may not suit everyone.
