Personalized Omega-3s: a genetic key to heart health?
NCT ID NCT07078344
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether omega-3 supplements can reduce inflammation and improve heart health differently depending on a person's genetic makeup and ancestry. Two hundred healthy adults of African or European descent will take omega-3s or a placebo for 12 weeks each, then switch. Researchers will measure fatty acid levels and inflammation markers to see if genetic variations affect the response.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Omega-3 fatty acids
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that omega-3 supplements are more effective for certain genetic groups, paving the way for personalized heart health recommendations.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with only 200 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study focuses on biomarkers, not hard outcomes like heart attacks, so real-world benefits remain uncertain.
