Simple supplements may fight muscle loss in COPD
NCT ID NCT07288619
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed study tested whether omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D supplements can improve weight, muscle mass, and fatigue in 45 people with COPD who also have cachexia (severe muscle wasting). Participants took the supplements twice daily for six weeks. The goal was to see if these nutrients could help manage the metabolic problems that make cachexia worse.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D supplements
What this could lead to
If effective, these supplements could offer a simple, low-cost way to help COPD patients with cachexia maintain weight and muscle strength.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 45 participants, so results may not apply widely. Supplements may cause mild side effects and are not a cure for COPD or cachexia.
