Diet and supplements tested to stop blood cancer before it starts
NCT ID NCT05640843
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a plant-based diet or supplements (omega-3 and curcumin) can change gut bacteria in people with MGUS or smoldering multiple myeloma, conditions that can lead to multiple myeloma. Researchers will measure butyrate levels in stool, a sign of healthy gut bacteria. The goal is to find a way to prevent progression to active cancer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Whole foods plant-based diet, algae omega-3 plus curcumin supplements
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a dietary or supplement approach to slow or prevent progression of MGUS or smoldering multiple myeloma to active multiple myeloma.
What could go wrong
This is an early, small study (180 participants) looking at a biomarker (butyrate levels) rather than clinical outcomes like disease progression. The diet and supplements may not change gut bacteria enough to affect the disease, and results may not apply to everyone.
