Immune cell therapy takes on stubborn stomach bug in transplant patients

NCT ID NCT04691622

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-stage trial tests whether specially grown immune cells (norovirus-specific T-cells) can safely treat chronic norovirus infections in people with weakened immune systems, such as those who had a stem cell or organ transplant. The study will enroll 48 participants and give them one of three doses of these cells. The main goal is to check for side effects, not yet to see if the treatment works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

norovirus-specific T-cells (NST therapy)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment for chronic norovirus in people with weakened immune systems, helping clear the infection.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial focused on safety, not effectiveness. It is small (48 people) and may not work or could cause side effects like graft-versus-host disease.
