Gum treatment may ease arthritis inflammation, small study hints
NCT ID NCT05880303
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a deep cleaning of the gums (nonsurgical periodontal therapy) could lower inflammation and improve quality of life in 20 people who have both rheumatoid arthritis and gum disease. Researchers measured changes in immune markers, bacteria in the mouth, and arthritis activity. The goal is to see if treating gum disease might also help control rheumatoid arthritis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nonsurgical periodontal therapy (deep cleaning of gums)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that treating gum disease helps manage rheumatoid arthritis inflammation and improve daily life.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It looks at markers of disease, not a proven treatment.
