Painless liver test could spare kids from needle biopsies

NCT ID NCT01072721

First seen Nov 20, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study tested whether a noninvasive device called FibroScan can accurately measure liver scarring (fibrosis) in children, potentially replacing the standard but painful liver biopsy. Researchers compared the device's readings to biopsy results in 264 children with various liver diseases. If proven reliable, this painless ultrasound method could avoid many unnecessary biopsies and make follow-up easier for young patients.
