Shock and shake: new combo therapy aims to rebuild muscle after brain bleed
NCT ID NCT03201094
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving patients electrical muscle stimulation and high-protein shakes soon after a type of stroke (aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage) can prevent muscle loss and improve recovery. Thirty adults will receive the combo therapy or standard care. The main goal is to see if muscle thickness changes, measured by ultrasound.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation and high-protein whey shakes
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, early intervention to reduce muscle wasting and improve recovery after a severe brain bleed.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The interventions are supportive and not expected to change the brain injury itself.
