Mind over migraine? brain scans may reveal who benefits from meditation

NCT ID NCT02145117

First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether brain scans can show changes in veterans with post-traumatic headaches after they complete a 9-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program. The goal is to find brain markers that might predict who improves. Veterans with mild post-traumatic headaches will be asked to undergo brain imaging and participate in MBSR training. The study also checks if it's feasible for veterans to complete the training and scans.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training
What this could lead to
If brain scans can predict who benefits from mindfulness training, it could lead to more personalized care for veterans with post-traumatic headaches.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study, so results may not apply to everyone. Brain imaging biomarkers are still experimental and may not reliably predict treatment response.
