Summary

Researchers are testing whether a multisensory nature experience, using natural materials and a virtual natural setting, reduces anxiety, fear, and pain in hospitalized children aged 5 to 9 during venous blood sampling. The trial compares this approach with standard care and also measures parents' anxiety and satisfaction, plus how long the blood draw takes. About 106 children with long-term illnesses who have had blood draws before take part, and observers rate the children's anxiety from video.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
a multisensory nature-based experience using natural materials and a virtual natural environment
What this could lead to
If it helps, hospitals could offer a low-cost, drug-free way to calm children during blood draws and other needle procedures.
What could go wrong
The trial is small and single-country, so results may not hold for all children or settings. Distraction approaches do not work for every child, and some may still feel fear or pain.
