Skinny implants may spare jawbone surgery

NCT ID NCT06168500

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether narrow dental implants work as well as standard-sized implants placed with bone regeneration in people with narrow jawbone in the back of the mouth. Thirty adults with a ridge width between 5 and 6.5 mm received either a 3.0 mm narrow implant or a 4.0 mm standard implant plus bone graft. Researchers measured bone levels around the implant and asked about discomfort and willingness to repeat the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
dental implant (narrow diameter 3.0mm or standard diameter 4.0mm with guided bone regeneration)
What this could lead to
If successful, narrow implants could offer a less invasive option for people with limited jawbone width, avoiding the need for additional bone grafting.
What could go wrong
This is a small completed study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both implant types carry risks like infection or implant failure.
